Superhuman Animal Hybrids Must Be Stopped

Apparently, some US Senators view the possibility of half human half animal hybrids as a threat to the human race. The Human Chimera Prohibition Act (S. 659) calls for the ban of the following:
(a) human embryos that are not fully human; (b) human embryos manufactured with parts from multiple embryos, fetuses, etc. (i.e. merging multiple people into a single person); (c) human eggs fertilized with animal sperm; (d) animal eggs fertilized with human sperm; (e) human eggs with an animal nucleus; (f) animal eggs with a human nucleus; (g) eggs with both human and animal chromosomes; (h) animals with human reproductive organs; and (i) animals with human brains or brains derived primarily from human neural tissue.
Why do we a chimera-ban? According to a memo from Senator Brownback's office:
Now is the time to act as chimeras are now being created. One example is a January 2005 National Geographic magazine article notes that the line between humans and animals has begun to be blurred “by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal. Chinese scientists … in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created.”
I want to see some gorilla/human hybrid football players as soon as possible. Or maybe a octopus/human gymnast? Call your senator and oppose this bill.

Interesting.

This law would outlaw naturally-occuring chimeric humans and, depending on the interpretation, anyone with a trisomy disorder.

I wonder if they intend to put pregnant women in jail if they wind up with an anencephallic pregnancy, or any of a number of other extreme pregnancy problems?

For that matter, there are snippets of plant and animal DNA in humans, transfered by viruses. This law would make everyone illegal.

I hope it passes. I could use a laugh.

I just put up an expanded commentary on S.659. I'd appreciate a comment. I gave you credit as well. Thanks!

(No trackbacks. I've given up on trackbacks. They don't seem to work well, if ever, for me. Sorry!)

No complaints here. I can suck myself off.

Personally, I support this bill. I see nothing productive out of wasting good money on trying to make the first human rabbit. It's just too freaky.

I think the whole thing's a little whacked out. I mean, I can see the idea cause it could be cruel to do like, weird experiments on people and stuff. So while I think it has reasons to be passed I think Congress could be useing their time a little more wisely. But, heehee, it's kinda nice having something whack in the law (okay, there's already whack in there....)
