Can the U.S. Win In Iraq?

What does winning in Iraq consist of? A new democracy in the Middle East? The Bush administration acts as if instituting a new democracy is like planting a weed. It will take root in less than a few months. Personally, I don't think the situation in Iraq is winnable and the fact that the so-called handover is exactly six weeks away doesn't help the situation. What sane Iraqi would want a position in the new U.S. approved government? They might-as-well put a giant target on their back. But what do I know?

The past two days I read a couple of articles that have strengthened my belief that this is a terrible situation and it is only going to get worse. Here are the articles:

What kind of un-American bullshit is this. If God didn't want American troops in Iraq, he wouldn't have told W. to send them there. End of story.

There are no countermeasures to a dozen nuclear warheads detonating simultaneously in U.S. cities. Think of what just two envelopes of anthrax did to paralyze the capital of the world's greatest superpower.

The passage of time, the propaganda of the anti-American left and the setbacks in Iraq have changed nothing of that truth. This is the first time in history that the knowledge of how to make society-destroying weapons has been democratized. Today small radical groups allied with small radical states can do the kind of damage to the world that in the past only a great, strategically located and industrialized power such as Germany or Japan could do.
